Zanzibar (Unguja) is a spice-and-Swahili island, not just a beach strip. Stone Town is a UNESCO maze; Nungwi and Kendwa are the social north; Paje and Jambiani are kite and backpacker east. It is one of the few tropical islands where a city day is as good as a reef day, and the price is still human.
Long rains March–May; shorter rains November. Seaweed on some east beaches is seasonal, not a rumor.

- Easy add-on after a safari on the Tanzanian mainland

- East-coast tides go out a long way — swimming is tide-dependent
- Conservative dress in Stone Town; beachwear belongs on the beach
- Power, hot water, and hawkers vary wildly by hotel
- Seaweed farming is a livelihood and also a smell/look some visitors hate
Airports
Transit on the ground (and water)
Ferry from Dar es Salaam
Azam Marine and others, roughly 1.5–2 hours to Stone Town.
A good option if you are already in Dar. Sit inside if the channel is rough. Passport handling happens at both ends.
Private driver or taxi
The comfortable way from ZNZ to Nungwi (about 1–1.5 hours) or Paje.
Agree the fare first. Night driving is possible but slower. Many hotels include pickup.
Dala-dala
Shared minivans. Cheap, crowded, and a cultural experience.
Fine with light bags in daylight. Not how you want to do a late airport run.
