The snapshot
St. Lucia is a lush volcanic island with a romance-resort reputation, sulfur springs, and two very different airports. Most long-haul flights use Hewanorra in the south; many hotels sit in the north or around Soufrière. That mismatch is the first planning decision.
Atlantic hurricane season June–November. Shoulder months can still be excellent value with travel insurance.
Pros
- The Pitons are a real skyline, not a marketing line
- Rainforest, waterfalls, and a drive-in volcano sit next to beach resorts
- Strong all-inclusive scene if you want dinner decided for you
- English-speaking, with a distinct Creole culture
Cons
- The UVF-to-north transfer is a winding 90-minute drive, often after a late flight
- Cruise days crowd Castries and some viewpoints
- Beaches are pretty rather than endless white-sand like Turks and Caicos
- Mosquitoes inland, especially after rain
Airports
Transit on the ground (and water)
Private transfer
The sane way from UVF to the north or Soufrière after dark.
Book through the hotel. The west-coast road is scenic and slow. Helicopter transfers exist for a price.
Taxis and minibuses
Shared minibuses are cheap by day; taxis are plentiful in tourist belts.
Minibuses stop running in the evening. Agree taxi fares before you sit down if there is no meter.
Water taxi
Useful around Soufrière and between some Piton-area hotels.
A nicer commute than the mountain road if your hotel offers it. Weather dependent.

3The island is gorgeous. The late-night UVF transfer in a tropical downpour was not. Next time I would sleep near the airport first.
