The snapshot

Fiji is friendlier and more layered than a single-resort atoll. Nadi is the hub, the Mamanucas are an easy boat ride, the Yasawas are a slower ferry chain, and Taveuni or the outer islands need domestic flights. Families, divers, and backpackers all have a version of Fiji that works.

Wet season November–April, with cyclone risk. The west (Nadi, Mamanucas) is drier than Suva.

How you get here

Fly into Nadi (NAN). Sleep near the airport or Denarau if you land late, then boat to the Mamanucas the next morning. For Taveuni or the far north, add a domestic flight.

Transit on the ground (and water)

Island ferries and day boats

South Sea Cruises and similar boats from Port Denarau to the Mamanucas; Yasawa Flyer for the chain of backpacker islands.

Denarau is 15–20 minutes from NAN. The Yasawa Flyer is a full-day hop with stops. Seas can be lumpy.

Domestic flights

Fiji Link and others to Taveuni, Savusavu, Kadavu, and more.

Baggage weights are tight. Build a buffer before your international departure home.

Buses and taxis on Viti Levu

Cheap and frequent buses between Nadi, the Coral Coast, and Suva.

Fine in daylight. For late NAN arrivals, pre-book a hotel car to Denarau or the Coral Coast.
