The Maldives is a chain of atolls, not one island you wander. Most visitors pick a single resort island and stay put. That is the magic and the limitation: extraordinary water and diving, very little local texture unless you specifically book a local-island guesthouse.

Southwest monsoon May–November brings more rain, wind, and choppier transfers. No cyclones in the usual Caribbean sense.

How you get here

Fly into Velana (MLE). Your resort will assign a speedboat, seaplane, or domestic flight. Match your international arrival to that transfer — seaplanes do not wait after sunset.

Transit on the ground (and water)

Speedboat

30–90 minutes from MLE to nearby atolls. Often included, and it runs after dark.

Choose a speedboat resort if you have a late arrival. It is cheaper and less weather-fragile than a seaplane.

Seaplane

Scenic 20–45 minute hops to distant atolls. Daylight only.

Bags are weighed separately. Cloud and wind can delay flights. Confirm whether the hotel meets you airside.

Domestic flight + boat

For far atolls: fly MLE to a domestic strip, then a short boat.

Often the only way to reach the far north or south without a very long seaplane. Coordinate the two pieces through the resort.
