The snapshot
Jamaica is larger and more layered than a beach-week brochure. Most visitors land at Montego Bay and stay in all-inclusives in MoBay, Negril, or Ocho Rios. That version works. The other version — Kingston, the Blue Mountains, slower parishes — takes more planning and a different comfort level. Both are Jamaica. They are not the same trip.
Hurricane season June–November. The island is large enough that one coast can be fine while another is wet. Travel insurance in autumn is still the adult move.
Pros
- A culture you can actually hear and eat — not a themed overlay
- A real budget-to-luxury spread, including all-inclusives that families already know
- Blue Mountains, waterfalls, and a north-coast reef, not just a sand strip
- English-speaking, with frequent flights from the US, UK, and Canada into Montego Bay
Cons
- Harassment and hustle in tourist belts are real; a gated resort is a choice, not a failure
- The drive between MoBay, Negril, and Ocho Rios is slower than the map suggests
- Kingston is a city with city problems; it is not a casual add-on to a beach week
- All-inclusive bubbles can leave you with a Jamaica that never leaves the property
Airports

Hotel transfer
The default from MBJ to the north-coast resorts.
Book through the hotel. Night arrivals on the North Coast Highway are not the moment to improvise.
Rental car
Freedom if you want waterfalls, rum, or a parish beyond the resort gate.
Left-hand driving, goats, and sudden rain. Skip night driving until you know the road. Some visitors hire a driver instead.
Knutsford Express and route taxis
Coaches between cities; shared taxis on local routes.
Knutsford is the civilized way Kingston–MoBay. Route taxis are cheap and crowded. Agree fares, watch your bag.
