The snapshot
St. Maarten (Dutch Sint Maarten, French Saint Martin) is a small island with an open border down the middle. Most visitors land at Princess Juliana (SXM) on the Dutch side, watch jets skim Maho Beach, and eat in Grand Case or Orient Bay on the French side. Philipsburg on a cruise day is not the whole trip. You do not need two hotels. You do need a car if you want both kitchens and both coasts.
Atlantic hurricane season June–November. Irma in 2017 hit this island hard. Autumn trips need insurance and flexible tickets.
Pros
- Two food cultures on one compact island — Grand Case is a real reason to come
- SXM is a hub: frequent US East Coast flights and an easy hop to Saba or Statia
- No formal border stop between the Dutch and French sides
- Beaches for different moods: Orient, Maho, Cupecoy, Dawn, and quieter coves
Cons
- Philipsburg and the cruise pier are loud, crowded, and a poor sample of the island
- Maho is a spectacle; it is also jet blast, noise, and not a swim-all-day beach
- Rental cars and restaurants add up; this is not a bargain Caribbean week
- Hurricane rebuilding is largely done, but the season is still the adult risk

The way to use both sides in one trip.
Right-hand driving. The border is a sign, not a checkpoint. Book ahead in high season. Traffic stacks up at the Simpson Bay causeway. Stay on the left in roundabouts the local way, not the way you guess.
Taxi
Fine from SXM to a nearby hotel. Pricey as a daily plan.
Agree the fare. Night rides to Grand Case add up. A car still wins if you will eat on both sides.
Minibuses
Shared vans on main corridors, cheap when you know the route.
Useful by day between Philipsburg, Simpson Bay, and some French-side towns. Not the arrival plan with luggage after a night flight.

5We stayed Dutch side, ate French side, and that was the correct split. Orient Bay in the morning. Grand Case at night. One cruise-day walk through Philipsburg was enough.

3SXM was an easy flight. Maho was fun for an hour. A tropical wave soaked two days. I would come in February next time and still rent the car.
