Easy once you land
The snapshot
Kauai is smaller and slower than Oahu, and greener than the Kona side of the Big Island. The north (Hanalei, Haena) is the lush postcard; the south (Poipu) is the drier swim coast. The Nā Pali cliffs sit between them with no coastal highway. Chickens, rain, and a rental car are part of the deal. Niʻihau, the forbidden island next door, is privately owned and not a visitor stop.
Hurricane season is June–November; Iniki in 1992 is still local memory. Winter means bigger north-shore surf and road flooding in Hanalei.
Pros
- Nā Pali, Waimea Canyon, and the north shore are the Hawaii landscape people mean by 'lush'
- Poipu is a reliable swim coast when the north is too rough or too wet
- No passport for US citizens; LIH has useful West Coast nonstops
- Quieter and more rural than Oahu or west Maui — roosters included
Cons
- The Kalalau Trail and Hāʻena need reservations; walk-up days are often gone
- A rental car is close to mandatory, and south-to-north is a real drive in rain
- Resort and grocery prices match the rest of Hawaii
- Winter on the north shore can cancel snorkel days and flood the one road into Hanalei

The default. Kauai's bus will not get you to Nā Pali or Waimea Canyon on a useful schedule.
Book early for holidays. The belt road does not circle the Nā Pali coast. Night rain plus one-lane bridges on the north is how people get stuck.
Kauai Bus
Cheap along the main towns; not a vacation plan by itself.
Fine if you are staying in Lihue or Kapaa and keeping the radius small. Not for Hāʻena or Polihale.
Boat, helicopter, and shuttles
How most people actually see Nā Pali if they are not hiking it.
Boat tours leave from Port Allen or Hanalei depending on season and swell. Helicopters are expensive and weather-dependent. Do not treat either as a guaranteed day.

5We stayed in Poipu and drove north twice. The canyon and a calm boat day along Nā Pali were the trip. Hanalei was pretty and soggy.
