A transfer or two
The snapshot
Moorea is Tahiti's neighbor, 30–45 minutes by ferry, with a lagoon that still photographs like a poster and a main island you can actually drive and hike. It is the usual answer to 'do I need Bora Bora?' You still fly into Tahiti first. You still pay French Polynesia prices. You get pineapple fields, Cook's and Opunohu bays, and guesthouses that Bora Bora barely has.
Austral summer rains and humidity peak November–April. Cyclones are possible but uncommon. The ferry can be lumpy in trade-wind weather.
Pros
- A lagoon and shark-ray sandbar day that rivals Bora Bora for less money
- Hikes, a ring road, and villages — you are not stuck on a motu
- The ferry from Papeete is cheaper and more frequent than an Air Tahiti hopper to Bora Bora
- A real spread of pensions and resorts, not only overwater bungalows
Cons
- It is still French Polynesia: groceries, car hire, and lagoon tours add up
- You cannot skip Tahiti — PPT is mandatory, and Papeete is a transit town
- Some beaches are coral-shelf rather than endless soft sand
- A short stay still burns two long-haul travel days from North America or Europe

Ferry
Aremiti and Terevau fast ferries, about 30–45 minutes Papeete–Vaiare.
Frequent by South Pacific standards. Sit on deck if you get seasick below. Evening crossings exist; match them to your PPT arrival so you are not stuck in Papeete overnight unless you want to be.
Rental car or scooter
The ring road is the island. A car is how you see both bays and the interior.
Right-hand driving. Book ahead in July–August. Scooters are fine in good weather; the interior Belvedere road is steep and often wet.
Le truck and hotel transfers
Le truck is the local bus; hotels collect at Vaiare.
Fine if you stay put. A car still wins for Cook's Bay, Opunohu, and a Temae swim stop on the way from the ferry.

5We skipped Bora Bora and spent six nights here. The lagoon day was the postcard. The rest was hiking and poisson cru in a pension. I did not miss the bungalow ladder.
