The snapshot

Samui is the Gulf of Thailand's most complete island: an airport, grocery stores, villas, a nightlife strip, and ferries to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. It is more developed than Palawan and cheaper than the South Pacific. Choose your coast carefully — they do not share the same weather or mood.

The gulf wet season often hits hardest October–December. Samui has its own weather pattern, different from Phuket.

How you get here

Fly into USM for ease, or into Surat Thani (URT) plus bus and ferry to save money. The airport is already on the populated east coast. Ferries onward to Phangan and Tao leave from the north.

Pros

You can fly onto the island instead of taking a mainland ferry
Food is a reason to come, not an afterthought
Easy island-hopping to Phangan (parties or quiet beaches) and Tao (diving)
Villas and spas that would be luxury-priced in the Caribbean

Cons

Samui Airport is mostly Bangkok Airways and can be pricey
Chaweng is busy, commercial, and not everyone's postcard
Scooter accidents again — the hills are steep and wet roads are slick
October–November rain can be relentless

Open-air and charming. Dominated by Bangkok Airways from BKK and CNX, plus some regional flights. Fares are often higher than flying into Surat Thani.

Mainland, then a bus + ferry to Samui

The budget path. Combined bus-ferry tickets are well organized. Adds 3–5 hours versus landing at USM.

Transit on the ground (and water)

Songthaew and Grab

Shared pickup trucks on set routes; Grab where it works; taxis that like to negotiate.

Agree taxi prices. Songthaews are cheap along the east coast. A car or scooter helps for the quieter south and west.

Scooter or car rental

Freedom to chase the dry side of the island.

The ring road is straightforward. Night rain plus no streetlights is how people get hurt.

Seat ferries

Lomprayah and others to Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, and the mainland.

Morning boats are calmer. In the wet months, check cancellations before you book a same-day flight out of USM.
