The snapshot
Bora Bora is a small volcanic island wrapped in a turquoise lagoon. Most visitors stay on motu islets in overwater bungalows and barely need a town. It is one of the most beautiful lagoons on earth, and one of the least budget-friendly. You fly into Tahiti first, then take a short hopper to Motu Mute.
Austral summer rains and humidity peak November–April. Cyclones are possible but uncommon.
Pros
- Lagoon water that really is that color, with easy snorkeling off many bungalows
- Compact island — you can see the silhouette of Otemanu from almost everywhere
- Resort boats and airport launches make the last mile feel handled
- Quiet nights; this is a reset, not a party island
Cons
- Among the most expensive tropical stays in the world, including meals and activities
- Very little independent dining, nightlife, or rainy-day culture
- You cannot fly here nonstop from North America or Europe — Tahiti is mandatory
- A short stay still burns two long-haul travel days
Airports

Airport boat
Complimentary or paid launches from Motu Mute to Vaitape and the resort motus.
There is no bridge from the airport motu. Allow 15–45 minutes depending on your hotel. Confirm the pickup when you book — some launches wait for several flights.
Lagoon transfers
Hotel boats are the default. Water taxis exist but are not a walk-up network.
Once you are checked in, most people stay put. Inter-resort hopping is possible by arrangement, not by public timetable.
On the main island
A ring road, scooters, a few rental cars, and bicycles around Vaitape.
Useful if you stay on the main island or take a day trip for Bloody Mary's and Matira Beach. Not needed for a classic motu honeymoon.
