The snapshot

Maui is the easiest 'serious tropical island' for many North American travelers: no passport for US citizens, English, and a real rental-car network. It is also crowded in high season, expensive, and large enough that West Maui and South Maui feel like different trips.

Hurricane season is June–November but direct hits are uncommon. Winter brings bigger north-shore surf and occasional windstorms.

How you get here

Fly into Kahului (OGG). Pick up a car unless you are staying all-inclusive in one resort pocket and have tours booked. West Maui is 45–75 minutes; Wailea is 30–45.

Pros

Haleakalā sunrise, the Road to Hana, and snorkeling at Molokini or coral-rich south beaches
No passport for US and Canadian (with rules) visitors, and familiar infrastructure
A real mix of resort, small-town, and wild coastline
Whale season (roughly December–April) is genuinely spectacular

Cons

Rental cars and resort fees can outrun the airfare
Traffic between Kahului, Kaanapali, and Wailea on peak days
Some beaches have dangerous shorebreak — beautiful is not the same as swimmable
Visitor strain is a local political issue; respect closures and capacity rules

Tiny strip for skipping the Road to Hana by air. Limited scheduled service.

Transit on the ground (and water)

Rental car

The default. Most independent travelers will be unhappy without one.

Book early for winter and spring break. Some hotels charge for parking. Do not leave valuables in the car at trailheads.

Maui Bus

Cheap, slow, and useful along a few resort corridors.

Fine for a no-car experiment in Kihei or Kahului. Not a substitute for Hana or Haleakalā.

Shuttles and taxis

Airport SpeediShuttle, hotel cars, and rideshare in the busier towns.

Rideshare availability drops at night and on the far east side. Pre-arrange Hana or Haleakalā tours if you skip the car.

We based in Kihei, cooked a lot, and still spent plenty. Snorkeling at Ulua and a cloudy Haleakalā sunrise were the peaks.
